There was a lot to learn this year. I wrote 233 notes (down from 289 in 2023) and 145,814 words (up from 133,628 in 2023). Surprisingly, I didn't finish a single non-fiction book (though I started reading Thinking in Systems, The Creative Act, and How to Solve It).
I continued to explore one-of-one software, building tools for myself including org-ai to chat with my notes and a personal indexing service to search my notes in a way that tightly integrates with my org-mode based workflow.
Like many, I explored AI in earnest. At Mosey, we launched our first AI-powered features including automatically summarizing physical mail from state and local agencies.
Speaking of work, this was probably the hardest year so far. One of the biggest ships quietly saved 2000 hours of work for our customers just by enforcing that, of the thousands of possible compliance rules and billions of scenarios, what we tell customers is always applicable and always resolvable. We also launched automated employee handbooks and introduced a limited menu of managed services which have both started to take off.
Last year I wondered how AI applications will evolve and we are starting to see some useful tools (or at least, new ideas). The first AI employees launched and are some of the fastest growing startups today. A vision for services as software could disrupt a huge part of the overall economy.
Finally, I moved back to NYC in a rush over the summer and flew Bark Air with the dogs. While it's nice to be back, I learned that I don't really identify with grouchy/intense New Yorkers anymore (even if I act that way sometimes).
